3rd Viscount St Davids (1939-2009)

The 3rd Viscount St Davids died 26 April, 2009, aged 70. His viscountcy, cr 1918, was but one of a string of impressive peerages and a baronetcy, viz: 3rd Viscount St Davids, of Lydstep Haven in the County of Pembroke (United Kingdom, let. pat. 17 Jun 1918); 16th Baron Strange of Knokyn (England, writ sum. 29 Dec 1299); 24th Baron Hungerford (England, writ sum. 7 Jan 1425/6); 22nd Baron de Moleyns (England, writ sum. 13 Jan 1444/5); 3rd Baron St Davids, of Roch Castle in the County of Pembroke (United Kingdom, let. pat. 6 Jul 1908); 15th Baronet, styled "of Picton, co. Pembroke" (England, let. pat. 9 Nov 1621). He was born Colwyn Jestyn John Phillipps, 30 Jan 1939, son of the 2nd Viscount St Davids (b 19 Feb 1917; d 10 Jun 1991), by his wife the former Doreen Guinness Jowett (d 19 Oct 1956); and was educated at Sevenoaks School; late 2nd Lieutenant, Welsh Guards; Lord-in-Waiting (Government Whip) 1992-94; Deputy Speaker House of Lords 1995-99.

He married 1965, Augusta Victoria Correa Larrain, dau of Don Estantislao Correa Ugarte, of Santiago, Chile, by whom he had issue, two sons, (i) Hon Rhodri Colwyn Philipps (b. 16 Sep 1966), mar. 6 Sep 2003 Sarah Louise Colyn Butcher, only dau. of Dr Peter Butcher; & (ii) Hon Roland Augusto Jestyn Estantislao Philipps (b. 9 Apr 1970).

The elder son now succeeds to the peerages and the baronetcy.

His Funeral will be held in St Davids Cathedral on Wednesday 6 May.
